IPL24 Auction: Starc, Cummins draw big bucks for 2024 season
The auction for the 2024 Indian Premier League season has concluded with almost $41 million being spent by the 10 franchises across a total of 72 players.
Since the 2023 season Australian stars Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Travis Head have all played significant roles in winning the World Test Championship, retaining the Ashes in England, and winning the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.
T20 specialists Spencer Johnson, Ashton Turner and Jhye Richardson have spent the previous 12 months playing key roles for their respective sides in the Big Bash League.
Let’s take a look at the Australian players taking part in IPL24, as well as the odds of their respective teams to win the tournament.
Jhye Richardson — Delhi Capitals
The Delhi Capitals picked up Jhye Richardson on the back of his impressive form in a successful Perth Scorchers side. The right-arm quick joins fellow Australian stars David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, led by coach Ricky Ponting, as well Shai Hope, Harry Brook and local hero Rishabh Pant. With plenty of upside, the Capitals look like a great value play to win IPL24.

Spencer Johnson — Gujarat Titans
Spencer Johnson’s meteoric rise over the last 12 months has led to a gig with the Gujarat Titans for IPL24. The tall left-arm fast bowler joins fellow Australian Matthew Wade as well as Indian batter Shubman Gill and South African veteran David Miller. Johnson comes into a talented bowling unit that includes Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, which is a key factor in top cricket bookmakers pegging the Titans as outright favourites to win the IPL24 championship.

Mitchell Starc — Kolkata Knight Riders
Australian spearhead Mitchell Starc has broken the record to become the most expensive purchase in IPL history, gathering over $4.4 million to join the Kolkata Knight Riders. The lone Australian in the squad, Starc joins the likes of Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Andre Russell and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Despite the big spending, KKR will have their work cut out to win IPL24.
