Interstate assignment for Zedda in Sydney

Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher has opted to take Zedda interstate to chase her first city win on the final weekend of her three-year-old season.

Zedda is set to step up to 2000m for the first time in Saturday’s Owner Benefits Card Handicap against her own age at Rosehill in Sydney having finished in the placings at her past two starts in midweek city races in Melbourne.

“It just looks like a nice race for her,” Maher said.

“I think she’s been really consistent and up to the 2000, if she gets a bit of give in the track it would be ideal.”

Zedda will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy and she has drawn barrier six in the nine-horse field for the Benchmark 73-race.

The filly was on the fourth line of betting at $8 on Wednesday with last-start Wyong winner Falcon Island favourite at $2.80.

Zedda broke her maiden at Kyneton at her second start in March and registered the second win of her career at her fifth start when successful in a 1350m benchmark-64 race at Donald last month.

Since then the filly has finished third and second respectively in benchmark races against her own age and sex over 1300m and 1600m at Sandown.

“I reckon she’s just been really consistent this preparation. I think the 2000 should be no problem at all,” Maher said.
