I Am Impinge, Whypeeo on trial for Rose

Tony Edmonds-trained stablemates Whypeeo and I Am Impinge are at long odds for the Group One Golden Rose but a good showing by either or both at Doomben could prompt a change.

Whypeeo is the favourite for Saturday’s VCV 3YO handicap (1200m) with I Am Impinge the second-elect while both are at $101 in the Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 23.

Both had their first starts in NSW to take advantage of the BOBS bonuses with Whypeeo successful at Ballina and i Am Impinge winning at Coffs Harbour.

Like star stablemate Houtzen, The two are by I Am Invincible who Edmonds trained early in his career when he was based in Sydney.

The stallion’s success with his first four crops means his service fee this season has jumped to $110,000 after he began his career at $11,000.

I Am Impinge is raced by Segenhoe Stud which also has an interest in Whypeeo.

“Obviously I Am Impinge has a long way to go before we start talking about Group One races. But with these promising well-bred horses you have to throw in a nomination,” Edmonds said.

“He won a trial well before his first start and his Coffs Harbour run was good. Saturday is another step up for him.”

Apprentice Matt McGillivray will ride I Am Impinge reducing his weight to 53kg while senior jockey Michael Cahill has the mount on Whypeeo.

McGillivray will also ride the Edmonds-trained Mr Epic in the Open Handicap (2040m) as the gelding tries to build on his recent win at Doomben last Saturday week.

“Mr Epic was a bit disappointing earlier this campaign but he had been looking for 2000 metres and fought on well to win last start,” he said.

Houtzen had her first serious hit-out this campaign at trackwork on Tuesday and worked strongly.

Edmonds has made no final decision about where she will have her first start this preparation as she builds up to The Everest at Randwick on October 14 but is leaning towards Melbourne for her first-up run.
