Horse trainers charged with animal cruelty

Two Queensland men have been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly castrating two thoroughbred colts without pain relief.

The men, a 69-year-old licensed thoroughbred trainer from Rockhampton and a 72-year-old licensed thoroughbred stablehand from Kenilworth, were both charged by the Queensland Racing Crime Squad.

The pair will face Rockhampton Magistrates Court on November 14 charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of using a prohibited thing under the Racing Integrity Act.

The stablehand has also been charged with possessing a dangerous drug and will appear at the Nambour Magistrates Court on that charge on December 3.

Both men’s licences have been suspended.

In an unrelated incident, a 61-year-old licensed thoroughbred trainer from Cairns has also been charged with animal cruelty allegedly overdriving, overriding or overworking an injured horse between October 5 and 20.

The man will appear at Cairns Magistrates Court on November 12 and moves are underway to suspend his licence.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said the various charges show how seriously the commission deems the mistreatment of animals in the racing industry.

“Animal welfare is of the utmost importance and participants must put the welfare of their racing animals before all else,” Mr Barnett said.
