Hawthorn thmup West Coast but injury toll sours 50-point win
Hawthorn got their season back on track with a convincing 50-point win over a winless West Coast on Sunday evening, but it came at a cost with Jack Scrimshaw and Karl Amon both sidelined due to concussion.
The Hawks were wayward early but eventually found their rhythm to cruise to a 18.16 (124) to 11.8 (74) victory at Marvel Stadium, snapping a two-game losing streak in the process.
Led by a dominant Mabior Chol and veteran Jack Gunston, the Hawks were never seriously challenged after quarter-time despite some patches of resistance from the Eagles.
Chol was at his brilliant best, showcasing his full bag of tricks with three goals, two towering marks and some dazzling footwork that left opponents sprawling. The 200cm tall was simply too much for Oscar Allen – playing down back in a curious tactical move – who had no answers for Chol’s aerial threat and agility at ground level.
Gunston turned back the clock with four majors, while midfielders Henry Hustwaite and James Worpel (both 24 disposals) were prolific, and Lloyd Meek (57 hitouts) dominated the ruck contest.
Hawthorn had their chances to put the game to bed earlier but butchered opportunities in front of goal, kicking 2.8 in the first quarter despite controlling play.
Coach Sam Mitchell swung an unusual positional change by throwing Tom Barrass forward briefly to shake things up, but the Hawks’ inaccurate finishing remained a theme until late when they put their foot down to blow the margin out.
There were still some concerns for the Hawks with Scrimshaw substituted out at halftime after a heavy collision with Liam Ryan, and Amon failing a head injury assessment after an awkward contest.
For West Coast, it was another night of frustration. Harley Reid had a rollercoaster game, battling with confidence early but finishing strongly with two second-half goals and a team-high seven clearances. Liam Ryan chipped in with three goals, while Ryan Maric and Brady Hough fought hard through the middle.
Despite flashes of excitement, the Eagles were again comfortably outworked, slipping to 0-6 for the 2025 AFL season and facing more questions about their rebuild after another heavy defeat.
Hawthorn (4-2) will now prepare for a clash with Richmond next Sunday, while West Coast (0-6) returns home to take on Melbourne at Optus Stadium.
Hawthorn v West Coast final score
Hawthorn 18.16 (124)
