GWS v Brisbane match preview

The GWS Giants will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the 2024 AFL season when they host the struggling Brisbane Lions at Manuka Oval on ANZAC Day.

GWS went into their round six contest against the Blues as slight favourites but left Marvel Stadium empty-handed after leading at halftime. The Giants were safely held in the hitout and clearance stats, lost the inside 50 count, and were inefficient with their ball-use under the Carlton pressure. The Giants had a mixed night at the tribunal with Toby Greene losing his appeal against a one-match ban for rough conduct and Jesse Hogan successfully appealing his ban for striking. The Brisbane Lions entered round six as warm favourites against Geelong but were found wanting in wet and slippery conditions. Scores were level going into the fourth quarter, but the Lions could not match the intensity of their opponents to suffer a rare home defeat.

The Lions’ injury list continues to lengthen. Oscar McInerney will need to satisfy concussion protocols after a head knock and will likely be replaced in the ruck by Darcy Fort. Callum Ah Chee may feel some selection heat after a quiet run, while Conor McKenna and Jaxon Prior are available if coach Chris Fagan decides to shake up his backline.

Giants v Lions betting strategy

While the Giants do not hold a great winning record against the Lions, this a good opportunity for them. The loss of Greene will hurt their chances, but GWS have only really played one bad half of football all season. They are a high-disposal team, and Brisbane can unravel when deprived of the ball for long periods. GWS with the -1.5 handicap looks like a solid tip at $1.90 on Unibet.
