With finals implications on the line, the AFL clash between the Gold Coast Suns and Collingwood at Metricon Stadium this Saturday should be one of the most compelling games of round 16.
The Suns were desperately unlucky not to return from a tough Adelaide road trip with premiership points. The game was close throughout, and the Suns came within a single kick of grabbing the spoils. This week they are back on home soil, where their 2022 record is very solid.
The Suns have made huge strides this season – particularly in the scoring department, where they now have multiple goalkickers lining up. Remarkably, the Suns rank 17th in the comp for disposals, so they cannot be accused of over-using the football. They are 18th for handballs, so the coaching staff have obviously employed a game plan that relies on slow and accurate kicks rather than frantic handpasses.
Collingwood are riding high on a five-game winning streak that includes victories over three fellow top-eight teams, so they will be looking to further press their finals aspirations here. There is much to like about the Magpies in 2022, and they are deserving of their current ladder position.
Collingwood will need to keep winning, though; the top-eight challengers are coming, so any slip up will be punished. We have them pencilled in between seventh and ninth, depending how the next few rounds play out. Both the Magpies and the Suns are high-tackling sides, so effective ball-use under pressure might prove the key.
Key matchup: Rankine vs Ginnivan
Gold Coast small forward Izak Rankine has been a quiet achiever this season but is averaging an impressive 1.5 goals per game. The 22-year-old is quick at ground level and benefits from having the likes Mabior Chol and Levi Casboult contesting in the air.
Collingwood’s Jack Ginnivan is making a name for himself in 2022. The cocky 19-year-old attracts plenty of attention and seems to revel in the spotlight. Ginnivan is averaging 1.9 goals per game this year, which places him in elite company. He draws plenty of free kicks and knows how to slot the goal from anywhere within the 50-metre arc.
On what is expected to be a wet track, the small forwards might play a big role in determining the winner. Keep a close eye on these two young guns.
Gold Coast vs Collingwood Rd 16 betting strategy
AFL betting markets have this game priced as a coin flip with the line set at a negligible 3.5 points. Rain is forecast and the total points line is a mere 143.5 points, so a low-scoring, hard-fought contest is anticipated. We are sticking with the Suns and are happy to take them at the line. Their increasingly potent forward line should be able to trouble the Magpie defence and provide enough scoring opportunities to get them over the line.
Gold Coast Suns -3.5
Gold Coast vs Collingwood same-game multi tips
For those uninterested in coin flip odds, we suggest a same game combo that will have you on the edge of the couch. We are linking the Suns -3.5, into Noah Anderson 25+ disposals, into Izak Rankine 2+ goals. This combo will return a handsome $5.64 courtesy of Ladbrokes. Anderson and Rankine are often overlooked given the calibre of their teammates, and both represent good value here.
Suns -3.5 / Anderson 25+ disposals / Rankine 2+ goals
