Gelagotis, Martin share Randwick result

Peter Gelagotis and apprentice Jack Martin combined to celebrate their first wins in Sydney, an experience slightly tarnished by having to share the spoils.

The Victorian duo were on the brink of winning a benchmark race at Randwick with Moss ‘n’ Dale ($6) but the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Roaring to Win ($8) and Brenton Avdulla lunged on the line to dead-heat.

“It’s a bit of a numb feeling but it’s deemed a win isn’t it?” Moe-based Gelagotis said.

“I’m very grateful, it’s my first win in New South Wales.”

Sharing the prize money amounted to a successful day for Gelagotis after Youl Dash For Cash was beaten out of a place in a 2400m race.

“We expected a little bit more from Youl Dash for Cash, we were confident with this boy and Illustrious Lad ran second in Adelaide so it hasn’t been a bad day overall.”

Martin was also pleased to share the limelight with Avdulla, who leads the Sydney jockey premiership.

“He (Moss ‘n’ Dale) over-raced a touch more than usual but he was tough to the line and he’s honest,” Martin said.

Peter Snowden was also happy to share the spoils.

“He ran terrific, the horse. He really struggled the whole way in the ground with a big weight on his back (60.5kg).

“It was a brave effort to get as close as he did. I don’t mind sharing it with Pete, he’s a good bloke.”
