Future for Jolly Sailor lies in Hong Kong

A three-time winner on Victorian tracks, Jolly Sailor will do his future racing in Hong Kong having passed a tough veterinary test.

Offers for Jolly Sailor came after the Henry Dwyer-trained gelding scored last start at Flemington on June 6 which followed another all-the-way win at Sandown last month.

Dwyer said he was disappointed to lose a horse of Jolly Sailor’s potential, but is hopeful of getting the yearling and weanling siblings of the gelding to train.

Jolly Sailor is entered for a couple of races at Caulfield on Saturday, but Dwyer said the three-year-old had run his last race in Australia.

“He’s been sold and he’s off to Hong Kong,” Dwyer said.

“Unfortunately it’s part of the game. Everyone needs to replenish their finances to get more horses and you’ve got to sell them when the offer comes.

“It’s not a big issue. The owners have the mare and a couple of siblings of the horse and a few others with me and they have to be paid for somehow.

“When you get the money you have to sell them, particularly the late three-year-olds as there will be options up there for him and it would be very hard trying to get that money for him down here.

“We’ll be cheering for Jolly Sailor up there to improve his dam’s breeding page.”
