2017/18 A-League soccer betting

THREE draws in five games put paid to last week’s A-League multi tip.

Sydney FC saluted to stay within striking distance of top spot, but Wellington Phoenix, Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory all failed to get over the line.

We also had Melbourne City and Adelaide United slated for a draw, but the league leaders kept their perfect record intact with a 2-0 win.

Melbourne City vs. Sydney FC

Friday, November 3 – 7:50pm AEDT – AAMI Park, Melbourne

City – $3.30
Draw – $3.60
Sydney – $2.10

It is not often that a team with four wins from four games starts as the outsider at home, but that’s how things are shaping up for Melbourne City. Ross McCormack impressed again last week with his dead-ball skills and all-round forward nous, while a rejuvenated Bruce Kamau took out the October nomination for the Young Football of the Year award. Sydney are also undefeated, but are they as solid now as they were last season? City are paying overs here.

Newcastle Jets vs. Wellington Phoenix

Saturday, November 4 – 7:50pm AEDT – McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Jets – $2.05
Draw – $3.60
Phoenix – $3.40

This Newcastle side bears little resemblance to the one that finished dead last in 2016/17. A-League Golden Boot candidate Roy O’Donovan has made a fast start to life in the Hunter Valley, but it was Dimitri Petratos who netted the equaliser in Sunday’s draw with Western Sydney. The Phoenix are playing some good football without much reward, but they have only themselves to blame for throwing away a three-goal lead against the Roar last weekend. Back the hosts to extend their unbeaten run with a win.

Perth Glory vs. Adelaide United

Saturday, November 4 – 7pm AWST – NIB Stadium, Perth

Glory – $2.15
Draw – $3.60
United – $3.10

As was the case all last season, a leaky defence has sharply undercut Perth’s obvious attacking assets. If those issues are not addressed, they will need much more end product from the likes of Diego Castro, Adam Taggart and Andy Keogh to have any hope of playing finals. Adelaide are on the up after a horrid title defence last term, but they were outclassed by City and McCormack in round four. Although the trip west is not as far for United as for the eastern clubs, the Glory should have the firepower to get it done.

Brisbane Roar vs. Central Coast Mariners

Sunday, November 5 – 5pm AEDT – Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Roar – $1.85
Draw – $3.85
Mariners – $3.75

Brisbane were dead and buried 20 minutes into their clash with the Nix last week, but they rallied from three goals down to pinch their first point of the season with a brace from Massimo Maccarone either side of a 66th-minute strike from Avraam Papadopoulos. Also searching for their first win in A-League 2017/18 are the Mariners, who drew with the Victory on Sunday despite having the better of the play. We now know the Roar have some fire the belly after all, so get on them for a home win.

Melbourne Victory vs. Western Sydney Wanderers

Monday, November 6 – 7:50pm AEDT – Etihad Stadium, Melbourne

Victory – $2.50
Draw – $3.40
Wanderers – $2.70

The most alarming thing about the Victory’s performance on the Central Coast was the complete lack of technical quality on display. Their passing was laughable, especially whenever Mitch Austin was involved, while Mark Milligan was the only player among the visitors to show any real poise on the ball. Wanderers are unbeaten after four, but they have not tasted victory since their opening-round triumph over Perth. Expect a healthy crowd on Melbourne Cup eve to be left disappointed by a scratchy stalemate.
