WHAT a week of English Premier League football it has been.
Another frustrating home performance saw Liverpool drop points to Crystal Palace when they had the opportunity to put pressure on the top two.
Chelsea backed up their FA Cup semifinal success with a much-needed league win, although Southampton made them work for it in a six-goal feast.
Tottenham just about did enough against Palace to close the gap again on Thursday morning, while Arsenal were fortunate to scrape a 1-0 result against unlucky Leicester City.
And it isn’t over yet, with a potentially decisive Manchester derby still to come on Friday at 5am AEST.
Another huge local rivalry headlines the weekend fixtures as Spurs host the Gunners in a clash that could also have significant consequences at the top end of the table.

Southampton vs. Hull City
Sunday, April 30, 2017 – 12am AEST – St Mary’s Stadium
- Southampton win/over 2.5 goals – +150 at CrownBet
- Nathan Redmond first goalscorer – +600 at William Hill
Despite showing some bright patches in their last two outings, Southampton were ultimately outclassed by both Man City and Chelsea.
Those results leave Claude Puel’s men ninth in the table and in danger of falling outside the top half if they cannot pick up some points in the closing weeks.
Sofiane Boufal is recovering from a knock and could feature, but neither Charlie Austin nor Virgil van Dijk are likely to play any further part in EPL 2016-17.
Hull are back in business after rallying from a man down to clinch a vital 2-0 win over Watford.
In even better news, Oumar Niasse will be available after his ludicrous sending-off was overturned by the FA this week.
The Tigers will need every weapon they possess if they wish to improve upon their pathetic record away from home.
Hull have not won on the road since beating Swansea in August, conceding a league-high 32 goals on their travels.
Manchester United vs. Swansea City
Sunday, April 30, 2017 – 9pm AEST – Old Trafford
- 1-1 correct score – +800 at William Hill
- Gylfi Sigurdsson anytime goalscorer – +450 at Sportsbet
This is the scenario with which Man United have struggled all season: a home fixture against a very beatable team.
Stoke, Burnley, West Ham, Hull, Bournemouth, West Brom – all of those ended in draws, as did dates with Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton.
Yet the Red Devils remain unbeaten in the Premier League since October, and a result against Man City on Friday morning would put them in prime position to vault into the Champions League places.
They have suffered some casualties over the last week or so, however, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo both out for the season – and likely much of the next – after wrecking their knee ligaments.
Swansea might well count themselves unlucky to have made no progress in their fight for survival.
Last week’s impressive victory over Stoke was cancelled out by wins for Hull, Bournemouth, Palace and Middlesbrough, meaning Paul Clement’s men remain two points from the safety zone and four ahead of 19th place.
The Swans could have a few key players back this week as Jack Cork, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson look to prove their fitness.
And with United a little short-staffed and coming off a gruelling run of four games in 11 days, punters could do much worse than take the big money on the visitors to snatch a result.
Everton vs. Chelsea
Sunday, April 30, 2017 – 11:05pm AEST – Goodison Park
- Half-time draw/full-time Chelsea – +450 at William Hill
- Eden Hazard first goalscorer – +580 at CrownBet
What we have learned about Everton this season is that they are far too good for mid-table yet someways short of challenging for the top four.
While they have not lost in four games, the Toffees were very poor in last weekend’s goalless draw away at West Ham.
Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori are significant absentees in the back half, but only the most foolish of punters would write the Merseysiders off entirely with Romelu Lukaku leading the line.
Chelsea did not have it all their own way against Southampton, but the 4-2 scoreline is not a true reflection of what was a rather dominant second-half display.
Diego Costa was back on the score sheet in midweek, striking twice, while in-form playmakers Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard impressed once again.
Everton are no easybeats, but they will have their work cut out against a Chelsea side that cannot afford anymore slip-ups in the run home.
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Arsenal
Monday, May 1, 2017 – 1:30am AEST – White Hart Lane
- Spurs win/under 3.5 goals – +205 at CrownBet
- Dele Alli first goalscorer – +600 at Sportsbet
Spurs are leaving nothing in the tank as they look to snatch the 2016-17 Premier League title from Chelsea’s grasp.
It took an absolute blinder from Christian Eriksen late in the second half, but the 1-0 win over Palace was their eighth in a row.
A win this weekend would be doubly delightful for Mauricio Pochettino and co. as it would pile the pressure back on the Blues whilst also throwing Arsenal’s top-four prospects into serious doubt.
It was only a jammy deflected goal from Nacho Monreal that separated the Gunners from Leicester in midweek.
Alexis Sanchez was poor until being shifted wide to accommodate Olivier Giroud after half-time, so one wonders how the under-fire Arsene Wenger will set his side out for the short jaunt to White Hart Lane.
The big worry for Arsenal is the fitness of Laurent Koscielny, who limped out of the Thursday’s clash with a knee problem that could sideline him for the derby.
There is, however, a key stat that may reassure Gunners fans: Tottenham have beaten them only once in their last nine meetings in all competitions.
