EPL title race heats up after Man City drop more points
In a breathtaking Matchweek 13 of the 2023-24 English Premier League, soccer fans were treated to a spectacle of unexpected twists and high-stakes drama, particularly at Anfield and Etihad Stadium on Monday (AEDT).
On Merseyside, Liverpool found themselves in a precarious position against Fulham when the visitors took a 3-2 lead through Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the 80th minute of a pulsating contest.
However, the home side showcased resilience, equalising with a composed finish from substitute Wataru Endo in the 87th minute.
Riding the wave of momentum, the Reds secured a thrilling 4-3 victory moments later, courtesy of Trent Alexander-Arnold’ second brilliant strike of the game — although the first was later ruled as an own goal to Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.
Down the M62 at Etihad Stadium, Manchester City’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur was destined for excitement.
Spurs striker Son Heung-min scored at both ends within the opening 10 minutes, setting the stage for a riveting encounter.
Phil Foden gave City the lead later in the first half, but Spurs responded after the break with Giovani Lo Celso finding the net in the 69th minute.
Jack Grealish seemed to seal the win for City in the 81st minute, only for Dejan Kulusevski to level the scores in the 90th minute.
Controversy ensued as City were denied a late winner, with a free-kick awarded instead of playing advantage after Grealish broke through on goal.
The drama extended across the rest of Monday’s fixtures, with Chelsea securing a 3-2 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa rescuing a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, and West Ham settling for a 1-1 result with Crystal Palace.
Arsenal maintained their position atop the EPL standings with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Liverpool, now two points behind, sitting second after jumping ahead of Manchester City.
Despite Arsenal’s lead, top EPL bookmakers still consider Manchester City as short-priced favourites at $1.67 to defend their title.
Arsenal follow at $4.33, with Liverpool priced at $5, while no other teams are priced better than $41 in the latest EPL outright betting marketw.
