A Western Sydney derby will be the feature game of Round 14 in the NRL, with the Parramatta Eels hosting the Wests Tigers at Bankwest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers are the $4 outsiders despite ending the undefeated streak of Penrith, but an upset win could see them move to the precipice of the top eight.
Parramatta annihilated Newcastle in their last start and they will welcome back Junior Paulo, who is named to play despite representative duties for New South Wales earlier in the week.
The Eels will be without Reed Mahoney, who could miss up to six weeks with a subluxation of his shoulder. Joey Lussick has been named as his replacement in what is otherwise a full-strength side on paper. Their Easter Monday clash from earlier in the season saw 68 total points scored with both Tom Opacic and Blake Ferguson scoring a double, so perhaps we can expect to see another high-scoring contest.
Eels vs Tigers betting preview
Parramatta showed against Newcastle that against bad NRL teams, they generally have a field day against them. When they run into other top four sides, they are on the other end of it far too regularly. Get on the 13+ margin at $2 while you still can, it shouldn’t be available for long. The Eels have won their last six games against the Tigers and have won by double digits in seven of their nine games against bottom eight sides, so that figure only strengthens the argument for a big win. The -10.5 line is an absolute must in same game multis, as is Maika Sivo to score at any time, having scored four tries in five career games against the Tigers. He is $7 to get the first of the game and will no doubt be backed off the map, but Tom Opacic at $15 is another one to keep an eye on.
While the Tigers have covered the line in each of their last four matches, they will have to go against the grain quite dramatically. More than half the games in 2021 have been decided at the 13+ margin, so even if it feels close as a contest, chances are Parramatta have too much strike and the score blows out. Daine Laurie at $17 is a terrific option to get the first try of the match, with the absolute bolter at $36 being Luke Garner. James Roberts scored a double in his last outing at Bankwest Stadium, so can he do it again at $8? The 49.5 total points for the over/under also looks not enough for a Sunday afternoon at Bankwest Stadium, so include it in your bet slip.
Key matchup: Moses Mbye vs Dylan Brown
Moses Mbye isn’t the player we thought would come up in this section at this point in the season, but since his switch to the five-eighth role, he has made Luke Brooks a better player and their attack as a whole seems to be more fluent as a result. The one area of the spine where Parramatta are getting very little is Dylan Brown in the same role as Mbye. Brown is just one game removed from a three-game suspension, but he is still stuck with just one assist this year. To put that into perspective, Bryce Cartwright has five. This is one area where the Tigers have an advantage, so are they able continue their improvement and give the Eels a scare?
Eels vs Tigers predictions & best bets
Result: Parramatta Eels by 13+ points
Parramatta should get the win at the 13+ margin and stay within striking distance of the minor premiership.
Parramatta Eels by 13+ points
Same game multi: 3 legs @ $25.50
Maika Sivo looks a good chance to open the scoring at his happy hunting ground, and we like Isaiah Papali’i to cross at some stage after a recent cold streak.
Eels 13+ / Sivo first tryscorer / Papali’i anytime tryscorer
