Eawase seeks to emulate Mum’s magic moment

Eawase’s quest to emulate her mother’s success in the Magic Millions Classic gets underway when the first foal to race from Karuta Queen starts at Rosehill.

Co-trainers Petrer and Paul Snowden hope Eawase, who cost the China Horse Club $500,000 at the Gold Coast January sale, can to Queensland next month and match Karuta Queen’s 2011 exploits.

Eawase sports the same chestnut coat and white blaze as her dam, but Paul Snowden says so far the similarities end there.

“She’s a bit more laid back and probably bigger than what her mother is now,” he said.

“She doesn’t show the blistering speed of her mother but still has plenty to get her out of trouble.”

Trained by Neville Layt for most of her career, Karuta Queen amassed $1.85 million prize money with her $1.1 million from the Magic Millions Classic providing the bulk of the winnings.

She was retired in 2013 while under the care of Peter Moody and has produced two foals, Eawase and unraced three-year-old filly Infliction.

Snowden was encouraged by Eawase’s trial form at Randwick last month and Wyong on Monday, a run that rubberstamped her debut.

“Her first trial she missed the kick quite badly and made up good ground late. Obviously she pleased us at Wyong so she takes her place,” he said.

Eawase is among a host of juvenile talent father and son are aiming towards the $2 million Classic (1200m) on January 13, and Snowden admitted it was challenging to avoid stablemates in the bid to qualify as many as possible.

“We have to try and break them up a bit because the prize money is vital. If they are eligible and ready to go we’ll run them,” he said.

The stable took Eawase to Wyong to trial with a view to returning for the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic on December 21.

Snowden said Commissioner, who won Eawase’s trial, and Legislation would likely attempt to qualify in Brisbane while Breeders’ Plate runner-up Bondi was also closing in on his second start.
