Conor McGregor will try to get his reputation back on track with a win in the main event of UFC 264 this Saturday night against Dustin Poirier. BettingSite brings you free predictions, top tips and fight insights for what will be the third fight between these two men.
Poirier vs McGregor 3 UFC betting preview
Dustin Poirier (27-6) has only one loss over his last nine fights. His only loss across his current 6-1 run came in a UFC Lightweight Championship bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier’s impressive resume in recent years includes wins over Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Dan Hooker and Conor McGregor. The 32-year-old knocked McGregor out at UFC 257 and could have asked for a title fight after that win, but he decided to settle the score with McGregor once and for all in this rubber match on Saturday.
Conor McGregor (22-5) rose to superstardom with a 15-0 run from 2011 through 2015 that included a 7-0 run in the UFC. McGregor defeated Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier en route to a UFC Featherweight Championship bout against Jose Aldo that he won with a thrilling 13-second knockout. After going up in weight to face Nate Diaz at welterweight and losing, McGregor remained at welterweight to defeat Diaz in the rematch, a five-round classic. He knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Championship in his next fight to become the third multi-divisional champion in UFC history.
Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor betting predictions
But after that win over Alvarez, Conor McGregor took a long hiatus and made a ton of money fighting Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. McGregor returned to the UFC in October of 2018 and was beaten convincingly by Khabib Nurmagomedov. He picked up an exciting first-round knockout win over Donald Cerrone, but that win came against an aging veteran who has lost his last five fights.
The shape of UFC betting markets suggests punters just don’t know what to expect from McGregor at this point in his career. In his rematch against Nate Diaz, we saw a man willing to put in the work to add endurance training so that he could last in a long fight against an opponent with a tough jaw. McGregor never got a shot at revenge against Nurmagomedov. Will his thirst for revenge lead to a sensational performance here, or is the superstar we loved back in 2016 gone for good?
Dustin Poirier is a legitimate contender with an outstanding tank. He hurt McGregor badly with leg kicks in their last fight and will look to do so again in the rematch. Smart money may be on Poirier in this one as you know you are going to get an excellent performance from him and be favored in the later rounds should this fight go a while. But in what could be a career-defining fight for McGregor, we’re going to trust Notorious to come in with a better game plan this time around and find a way to score a finish.
