Wimbledon 2024: Duckworth v de Minaur preview

Australian pair James Duckworth and Alex de Minaur square off in round one of Wimbledon on Tuesday, having reached this stage by very different routes.

De Minaur comes to London as the No.9 seed. The 25-year-old is having the year of his life, having cracked the top 10 for the first time and won two titles already in 2024.

With a win-loss record of 33-12 this year, de Minaur is an outside shot at winning the title. His game is well suited to the grass; he boasts brilliant court coverage, while the skidding bounce minimises a few of the weaknesses in his game.

A title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last month means de Minaur is high on confidence coming into the year’s third Grand Slam.

Duckworth, on the other hand, gains entry to the main draw at Wimbledon courtesy of a lucky loser spot. The world No.78 lost in the final round of qualifying to Mark Lajal but was gifted a second chance when Corentin Moutet withdrew.

Despite Duckworth’s low ranking, he’s had a strong grass-court season to date.

The Aussie caused waves in Stuttgart when he knocked out No.2 seed Ben Shelton en route to the quarter-finals. The next week, he moved through qualifying and picked up a main-draw victory in Halle as well.

Overall, Duckworth is 10-4 on grass in the past month, with his game gelling well on the surface.

Wimbledon 2024: Duckworth v de Minaur betting predictions

This could be tighter than tennis bookmakers expect.

The pair have played just once before officially, with de Minaur winning 6-4, 6-4.

However, they will be familiar with each other’s games thanks to the Davis Cup and United Cup, where they will have practiced together plenty of times.

Over the last month, Duckworth has held his own against some excellent players on grass. Besides the upset of Shelton, the Aussie also played out tight contests against Hubert Hurkacz and Matteo Berrettini — two of the best on the surface.

De Minaur should get across the line. But it would be no surprise if Duckworth took a set, or at least forced several close sets, covering the handicap and total games markets.
