A new rivalry will be born on Friday night when the Dolphins play host to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in round four of the 2023 NRL season.

The Broncos have named an unchanged line-up from the side that beat the Dragons by 22 points on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Dolphins will be without Felise Kaufusi, who was found guilty of grade-two dangerous contact with Jackson Hastings, and could also lose star five-eighth Isaiya Katoa.

This top-of-the-table clash will be the yard stick the Dolphins measure themselves by. Wins over the Roosters, Raiders and Knights, who all had their injury issues, may have masked issues the new club has on the field. Will Kevin Walters and the Broncos be able to find the flaws and show their cross-town rival who rules Brisbane?

The Dolphins have greatly exceeded the expectations set for their first season in the NRL; however, the Broncos have arguably beaten far superior teams and in more convincing fashion. The loss of Kaufusi as well as the possibility of losing Katoa will only make life harder for the Dolphins. The Broncos outside backs have been lighting up the competition so far this season, scoring 12 of the team’s 14 tries for the season. Reece Walsh has been untouchable so far, scoring tries from all across the field, and is sure to cross the try-line again in this match ($1.98).

Selwyn Cobbo is set to be another target for the Broncos attack on Friday. Matched up against his much smaller former teammate Tesi Niu, cut-out passes and cross-field kicks look to be on the cards to get the Queensland winger across the line from the second week in a row ($1.73).

Dry conditions are predicted for Brisbane and one of the best scoring grounds in the world for rugby league. The Broncos and Dolphins lead the league for point-scoring, tries scored and try assists heading into round four, while also showing they are not perfect in defence. The battle in the middle between these two alpha-male forwards will be key to the Dolphins putting a stop to the incredible form Payne Haas is in. The experience and strength of Jesse Bromwich in the ruck will be integral to the Dolphins’ chances of springing another upset. If Bromwich and the Dolphins cannot find a way to slow Haas down, they will struggle to put themselves in positions where they can with this game of NRL footy.
