Derryn wins Darby Munro Stakes at Rosehill

Riding on the crest of a wave, rising star jockey Regan Bayliss has added a Sydney stakes win on Golden Slipper day to his recent haul of feature victories.

Bayliss guided three-year-old Derryn to a convincing win in Saturday’s Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at a rain-soaked Rosehill, with the colt relishing the heavy conditions.

Melbourne-based Bayliss landed his first Group One win aboard Redkirk Warrior in last Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap at Flemington before adding the Group Two Adelaide Cup on Monday aboard Annus Mirrabilis.

The Adelaide Cup win came on Bayliss’ 20th birthday, while Saturday’s victory on Derryn was Bayliss’ first stakes win in Sydney.

“Obviously I won the Newmarket, my first Group One and then the Adelaide Cup,” Bayliss said of the big week he has had.

“And to come here on such a prestigious day in the Sydney calendar and to pull off a win is truly remarkable.”

Bayliss said Derryn got conditions to suit in the heavy going on Saturday.

The colt settled back in the field before Bayliss brought him to the outside in the straight to make his winning run.

Derryn ($8.50) defeated Crafty Cop ($8.50) by 1-3/4 lengths with 1-1/4 lengths to favourite Tactical Advantage ($2.70) third.

“He was blessed today because he really relished those conditions,” Bayliss said.

“He’s also got a touch of class on his side so when you put those two things together it makes a racehorse who’s very hard to beat in these conditions.”

Co-trainer David Hayes said Derryn would head to the Group Two Arrowfield 3YO Sprint during The Championships.
