Derek Brunson released from UFC after 11 years

Derek Brunsons tenure with the UFC has come to an end after more than a decade. Ali Abdelaziz, Brunson’s manager from Dominance MMA, confirmed the news to The Associated Press on Thursday.

As an agent, Brunson is expected to explore opportunities in the light heavyweight division by considering offers from other promotions. Reflecting on his time with the UFC, Brunson expressed gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead.

“I’ve had some fights and created lasting memories during my journey with the UFC,” he stated.

“I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.”Throughout his career, which began in 2012, 39-year-old Brunson has been a figure in the middleweight division of the UFC.

With 23 victories and nine defeats under his belt, he consistently held a top-10 ranking over the course of seven years. In February’s UFC 271 event, Brunson suffered a decision loss against Jared Cannonier in his recent bout.

  • While he faced setbacks in two out of his three fights, it’s important to note that he also secured wins against opponents such as Kevin Holland, Lyoto Machida, and Darren Till, during his career. “Derek Brunson exemplifies warrior spirit,” commented Dana White, President of the UFC.”He has faced some of the best fighters in the world.

Has always delivered an entertaining performance.

We wish him the best in his endeavors.”Brunson’s departure coincides with the UFC’s efforts to trim down its roster.

Over the past year, they have let go of more than 60 fighters, including notable names like Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos, and Anderson Silva. The UFC’s decision to release Brunson likely stems from his decline in performance.

The promotion is aiming to create space for more fighters as Brunson is no longer viewed as a potential title contender. Despite being released, Brunson remains a fighter with plenty to offer.

It is highly probable that he will find a home in another promotion and may still pursue a championship opportunity.
