US Open 2024: De Minaur vs Evans preview
Top-ranked Australian Alex de Minaur takes on 34-year-old Dan Evans in the third round of the US Open this weekend in New York, with a spot in the round of 16 on the line for the winner.
More than that, though: with the shock exit of Carlos Alcaraz, both of these players will feel like they have a once in a lifetime shot at making a Grand Slam semi-final without needing to beat a big name.
Coming into the match, de Minaur is the higher-ranked player with the better form this year.
The Aussie is having a breakout year, cracking the world’s top 10 for the first time and bagging statement wins over the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev in 2024.
Evans, on the other hand, has been abysmal. He was 11-20 across all events coming into New York, 6-17 on the ATP Tour, and had lost 11 of his last 12 Tour-level matches.
However, a hip injury for de Minaur muddies the waters somewhat. The No.10 seed suffered the injury at Wimbledon and is playing at the US Open for the first time since then.
He has looked solid, but there are definitely still strong question marks over how his physique will hold up across the coming matches.
Evans has had a brilliant US Open so far, winning the longest-ever match at the tournament before dispatching his second-round opponent in straight sets.

US Open 2024: De Minaur v Evans betting predictions
The reason the primary de Minaur vs Evans betting tip is for this match to be under 34.5 games is because of the state that each man enters the third round in.
As touched on, de Minaur’s hip is a question mark, while Evans’ long match earlier in the week has to have taken a toll on him.
Regardless of who wins, expect this to be over in less than 35 games, and likely in just three sets.
In saying this, chances are the de Minaur’s hip holds up, and the way this one goes is a 3-0 win for the Australian.
While Evans’ performance at the US Open so far has been a step up from his poor run of form heading into the tournament, the reality is, he has not been tested too vigorously.
His marathon match was against Karen Khachanov, who will be the first to admit he is playing the worst tennis of his life right now.
Then his most recent win came against a man who had literally never won a hard-court match on the ATP Tour before coming to New York this week.
A healthy de Minaur should easily expose Evans’ weaknesses and run through the Brit in straight sets.
