The battle for the Wooden Spoon will take place at the Gabba this year as the Brisbane Lions host the Carlton Blues.
Now, this match is far from the most important when it comes to the 2018 season, but it will be a huge match in the context of the future. The loser of this match will most-likely receive the wooden spoon and the number one pick in the 2018 draft, which has been touted as the best draft in years.
The Lions played very well in round 15 and were able to knock off an injury-depleted Fremantle Dockers at Optus Stadium. Cam Rayner led the way for the Lions and kicked two goals, also gathering 19 disposals, a performance that later earned him the Round 15 Rising Star nomination.
Carlton played well against the talented Port Adelaide Power, but everything fell apart after the young group couldn’t sustain the effort for a full four quarters.
The match looks like it could be a close one. The Blues have been competitive in recent weeks and the Lions are still without Harris Andrews, who is the only Brisbane player capable of stopping the rampaging Charlie Curnow.
The Lions are entering the match as favourites, and with good reason. They lead the statistics in many important categories such as disposal efficiency and disposals, meaning they get more of the ball and use it at a better rate.
Here are the tips we have discovered for this week’s battle for the wooden spoon.
Brisbane Lions vs. Carlton Blues Round 16 – First to Tips
First team to 15 Points
Brisbane Lions @ $1.56
The Lions were able to get a jump on the Dockers last week and we believe they can do the job again here. Although both sides will be hoping for a hot start, we believe the home field advantage will play a crucial role in helping the young Lions. Stefan Martin has also had a great season, and with Matt Kreuzer still out with an ankle complaint, could get the Lions going in the first quarter.
First team to 3 behinds
When it comes to goal accuracy, both the Lions and the Blues fall short in comparison to most teams. We think Chris Fagan’s Lions will kick straighter than the Blues on this occasion, simply because they have better recent form in front of the sticks and know the conditions.
Brisbane Lions vs. Carlton Blues Round 16 – Player Specials Tips
Dayne Zorko to get 25 Disposals @ $1.91
The little magician Dayne Zorko plays well in every second match. You could argue that the horror season may have gotten to Dayne early, but the way he has turned around his pathway has impressed us enough to give him a chance this week. The odds are fairly healthy and can make us a good dollar if used correctly. The Blues do not have a player that can confidently shut down the likes of Dayne Zorko, whereas other sides in the past have targeted the small star.
Patrick Cripps to get 30 Disposals @ $1.70
This young gun is one of the best emerging players Carlton has had in a decade. The way Patrick finds the footy, in addition to his ability to go forward and kick goals makes him a crucial component to the team. We think the Blues will use Cripps as a midfielder this week in order to get the footy forward to Charlie Curnow. He should be able to accumulate the ball 30 times in this match.
Brisbane Lions vs. Carlton Blues Round 16 – Total Match points Tips
170 points Over/Under
Over @ $1.76
The Lions played in a match that had a final score that exceeded 180-points last week when they played Fremantle. The Lions normally play in very high-scoring matches because they are not the best defensively, but are fully capable on the offensive end of the ground. If that trend continues this week, we will be a few dollars richer.
Lions vs. Blues Match Predictions
Match Result: Brisbane Lions to win @ $1.40
Line Betting: Brisbane Lions -19.5 @ $1.92
The Lions will be playing in their third win of the season this week when they beat the Blues. Carlton just do not look convincing enough to beat a side that just beat Fremantle in Perth.
