Can Collingwood keep up their improbable winning streak when they host the surging Bombers at the MCG this Sunday in round 19 of the 2022 AFL season?
Collingwood continued their Harry Houdini routine in round 18 when they found another way to miraculously escape with the premiership points. The Magpies have won their last four games by five points, seven points, five points, and 11 points. So, do we elevate these performances for the team’s nerve and courage, or do we consider the Pies to be riding an unlikely lucky streak that is bound to end?
Craig McRae’s men have certainly defied expectations this year and now sit in fifth position on the ladder, tied on points with third-placed Brisbane and fourth-placed Fremantle. They have a poor percentage, though, which may prove critical at the end of the home and away season. Their young team also faces the challenge of rounding out a long and arduous season, so the Pies may just run out of legs in the coming weeks.
After a horror run in the first half of the season, the Bombers have found some startling late form. The team has suddenly clicked, and all of sudden the Dons look like a formidable unit. They were classes above the Suns in round 18, and we are officially on board the Bomber train. In fact, we are happy to declare Essendon as our Good Thing of round 19.
Young sides can be difficult to gauge, and sudden improvement can seemingly spring out of nowhere. That’s the Bombers right now. The pieces of the puzzle have come together and they are playing high-level football. Their last five games include wins over the Swans, Lions, Saints, and Suns, and a close loss to the Eagles in WA. Impressive stuff.
Key matchup: Mason Redman vs Nick Daicos
Mason Redman produced a massive effort in round 18. The 24-year-old defender grabbed 34 disposals, including 26 kicks, and landed four tackles to top the AFL Fantasy scoresheet. Redman kept the Suns at bay all game and repeatedly turned defence into attack to hurt his opponents on the counter. He is averaging a solid 22.2 disposals this season, and an impressive 440 metres gained. Redman will be instrumental in blunting Collingwood’s small forwards this weekend.
It’s hard to adequately describe the exploits of Collingwood rookie Nick Daicos. In round 18 the youngster grabbed 40 disposals, won two clearances, laid four tackles, and booted three goals. These numbers are among the best in the league, and Daicos is only 19 years old. The football world awaits to see what this prodigy can produce on the biggest stage in September.
Collingwood vs Essendon betting strategy
The Pies go into this game as narrow favourites, which is great news for us. The line has been set at a skinny 5.5 points, but we will be ignoring that to load up on the Bombers in the head-to-head market. That’s right, we will be reaching under the mattress to extract the emergency reserves. Let’s see if we can swing that market like the good old days and drive those odds down come kickoff. If you believe in form, back the Bombers. If you believe that lucky streaks must come to an end, back the Bombers. And if you like winning money on the punt, we recommend you back the Bombers.
Essendon to win
