Clarry Conners to chase another Oaks win

Veteran Warwick Farm trainer Clarry Conners has another chance at Group One glory in Brisbane after his filly Torvill scored an impressive win at Doomben.

Torvill ($4.40) came from the outside barrier to beat Another Dollar ($7.50) by 1-1/4 lengths with 1 1/4 lengths to Improvise ($10) in third place in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1600m).

Conners has a long history of winning big races in Brisbane, dating back to Air Seattle in the 1993 Queensland Derby.

Torvill is on course to give him his third Group One Queensland Oaks after he took the race with Zagalia (2003) and Allow (2006).

His last Group One winner in Brisbane was Apercu in the 2007 JJ Atkins Stakes but he has won several other stakes races since including the Doomben Roses and the 2015 BRC Sires’.

Conners missed Torvill’s win as he was on a plane to the US to see the Kentucky Derby.

But he is likely to be back to see Torvill run in the Doomben Roses as a lead-up to the Oaks.

Jockey James Orman rode his second stakes winner in a week when he got cover on Torvill from a wide barrier and brought her with a well timed run.

“She had the class edge here because she has been Group One placed but it was still a big run,” Orman, who has only been back riding for six week after a bad fall, said.

Trainer Chris Waller’s Queensland stable manager Paul Shailer was very happy with the run of Another Dollar.

“It was a good effort considering she never had cover and swap the runs and we test the winner who is very good,” Shailer said.

“Don’t forget that was only her fifth run and she will chase the Oaks.”
