Catchy expected to head to Danehill Stakes

Blue Diamond winner Catchy has been nominated for the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley but is expected to wait another week for her next start.

Catchy closed strongly in her first-up run at Caulfield on August 19 and just failed to reel in Crown Witness when second in the Quezette Stakes.

Nominations for Saturday’s Moonee Valley meeting were released on Monday with Catchy headlining 20 entries for the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) for fillies.

But senior Lindsay Park trainer David Hayes has said Catchy is scheduled to run in the Group Two Danehill Stakes at Flemington on Saturday week.

The Danehill Stakes is against the colts and geldings and Hayes said the filly’s performance in that race would determine whether Catchy took on the males again in the $2 million Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) or tackle her own sex in the $500,000 Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) on the same day.

“She’s going to have her next start in the Danehill on the 16th,” Hayes said at the Victorian racing awards.

“She’ll be really hard to beat. And if she beats them, I’d say we’ll go for the boys.

“And if she doesn’t we’ll go conservative and go against the girls.”

Catchy is on the fourth line of Caulfield Guineas betting at $13 while she is the $9 favourite for the Thousand Guineas.

The stable has also nominated Sanadaat and Pure Scot for the Atlantic Jewel, a race they won two years ago with Stay With Me on her way to Thousand Guineas success.

The Atlantic Jewel Stakes is set to feature the spring return of dual Group-winning filly Shoals from the Anthony Freedman stable.

Shoals was unbeaten in her three starts as a two-year-old including the Group Three Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington and Group Two Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
