Carlos Alcaraz upset by David Goffin at 2025 Miami Open

Second seed Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock loss at the Miami Open in Florida on Friday, losing his opening match to world No.55 David Goffin.
Alcaraz had been a heavy favourite across tennis betting sites to win the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, paying just $2.20 with BetOnline to claim the 18th title of his career.
He was priced at $1.04 to beat Goffin in their second-round match but was caught off guard when the 34-year-old veteran produced some of his best tennis, and Alcaraz struggled to find his own.
“I was feeling great,” Goffin said after the 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 upset.
“I knew that I had the game to cause him some trouble.
“I had a clear game plan, but sometimes he’s too good, even if you have the game plan.
“You have to do it perfectly to have opportunities, and that’s what I did, especially in the second and in the third [sets].”
Alcaraz struck 42 unforced errors over the two-hour, 18-minute match and revealed afterwards that he struggled physically.
“In general it was a poor level for me,” he said.
“I didn’t play well; physically, I didn’t feel well.
“In these kinds of matches, when you don’t have confidence in your level physically, I think it’s really tough to maintain good tennis.
“I felt good, a little bit nervous, which is normal before the match, but nothing more than that.
“I just felt ready. I thought that I was going to play really good tennis. “It didn’t happen.”
Alcaraz’s exit leaves Novak Djokovic the bookies’ favourite to claim the 2025 Miami Open, with the Serbian shortening to the first line of betting ($4.75) across top tennis betting sites ahead of Jack Draper ($5.50) and Alexander Zverev ($6.50).
Draper is yet to complete his opener in Miami, but Zverev won his own with little issue on Saturday, dropping just six games against Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.
“I’m generally happy with my level today,” the German said. “In Indian Wells it was very different, so I hope I can continue playing this way and have a great week here.”
Djokovic also navigated his first outing against Australia’s Rinky Hijikata with no issue, winning 6-0, 7-6(1) on Friday.
He plays lucky loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the third round, while Zverev takes on Aussie Jordan Thompson.
Both are heavy favourites at BetOnline to advance to the round of 16.
