Capitals down Super Giants by eight wickets as Mukesh stars

Delhi Capitals beat Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday morning (AEST), with fast bowler Mukesh Kumar taking 4/33 in a career-best IPL display.

Lucknow came into the clash as underdogs across online bookmakers but began well through openers Aiden Markram (52 from 33) and Mitchell Marsh (45 from 36).

The duo put on 87 runs for the first wicket before Markram fell on the final ball of the 10th over.

However, the rest of the LSG lineup failed to fire, with only Ayush Badoni (36 from 21) making a healthy contribution.

Nicholas Pooran (9 from 5), Abdul Samad (2 from 8), David Miller (14* from 15) and captain Rishabh Pant (0 from 2) all stuttered along, meaning the hosts could only manage 6/159 from their 20 overs.

Mukesh was the primary architect of LSG’s downfall, taking the wickets of Marsh and Samad before cleaning up Badoni and Pant in his final over.

Delhi were far less troubled in their chase of 160.

Abishek Porel (51 from 36) was dominant at the top of the order, sharing a 69-run stand with KL Rahul (57* from 42) after Karun Nair (15 from 9) fell early.

Captain Axar Patel (34* from 20) also had a good day with the bat, keeping Rahul company until LSG’s target was overhauled in the 18th over.

After the match, Pant rued his side’s inability to put more runs on the board in the first innings.

“We were 20 runs short,” he said.

“Toss played a huge part, whoever is bowling first gets a lot of help from the wicket.

“We just couldn’t get it away.

“It always happens in Lucknow, wicket becomes better in the second innings, that’s how it goes.

“We can’t make excuses but have to learn from it.”
