Bye See has provided the ideal tonic and early birthday gift for veteran trainer Michael Tubman at Rosehill.

The second and last foal to race out of Tubman’s late Silver Slipper-winning mare Chance Bye, the four-year-old justified her favouritism for the Freshmark Handicap (1500m) with a composed victory on Saturday.

With regular jockey Winona Costin in the saddle, Bye See ($3) claimed the lead at the 200 and then held off Travancore ($13) by half a length.

Ready For Success ($31) also finished strong to take third a long head further back.

Tubman, who turns 70 on Sunday, was rapt after Bye See bounced back from a second over 1600m at Randwick a fortnight ago to record her third win from eight starts.

“She’ll get better, she’s still learning. She’ll get 2000 metres and in good company,” Tubman said.

“Winona rode her brilliantly. She’s a good little rider. She doesn’t get the opportunities she should get.”

Tubman laughed when quizzed on his health.

“When I go to the doctor’s now they go through the records and say, ‘You’ve got heart problems, kidney problems, blood pressure problems’.

“I’m just getting old, that’s all.”

Tubman, who has six in work at Kembla Grange, said Bye See would take a break before campaigning in Queensland.
