Brownlow Medal betting shifts after Heeney cops one-match ban

Sydney Swans star Isaac Heeney
Sydney’s Isaac Heeney was among the Brownlow Medal favourites before receiving a one-match ban for an incident in Sunday’s loss to St Kilda.

AFL bookmakers have made significant adjustments to their Brownlow Medal betting markets following the suspension of Sydney Swans star Isaac Heeney.

The 28-year-old was handed a one-match ban after a one-on-one scuffle left St Kilda’s Jimmy Webster with a bloodied nose during Sydney’s loss to the Saints on Sunday.

While the Swans are expected to appeal the decision, online bookies have taken down Heeney’s Brownlow odds for the time being.

He was listed as a $5.50 chance with Bet365 last week, behind only Collingwood’s Nick Daicos ($3.75), Carlton’s Patrick Cripps ($4.50) and the Western Bulldogs’ Marcus Bontempelli ($5).

Now, Neds has installed Cripps as a $3.25 favourite, with Daicos ($4.25) and Bontempelli ($5.50) close behind.

Sydney wingman Errol Gulden has shortened to $17 after his teammate’s suspension, while Chad Warner remains an outside hope at $34.

The biggest mover in Brownlow betting this week is Essendon skipper Zach Merrett, who has plunged from $17 into $7.50 following his best-on-ground effort in the Bombers’ win over Collingwood in round 17.

Brisbane gun Lachie Neale has also climbed up a few rungs, improving from $26 to $13 after the Lions’ victory over the Adelaide Crows on Sunday.
