The Gold Coast Titans will travel up the M1 to take on the Brisbane Broncos this Friday night in a South East Queensland derby at Suncorp Stadium.
Adam Reynolds will be missing for the second week in a row for Brisbane after experiencing hamstring tightness, but that might be the least of their personnel issues going forward. Various media outlets are reporting that star prop Payne Haas has requested an immediate release from his Broncos contract, so it remains to be seen how the team’s forward pack will line up this week and beyond.
Meanwhile, the Titans are missing Phillip Sami through injury who has been replaced by Brian Kelly. Last time these two clubs was incredible, as the Titans started fast and scored four tries in 15 minutes, before the Broncos scored 36 straight points to go on and win. Will Friday night be a repeat?
Since the introduction of the Gold Coast Titans to the NRL, they have played big brothers Brisbane on 31 occasions and only won ten times. Despite their poor form in recent weeks with losses to the Roosters and Sharks, the Titans have had support in head-to-head markets being backed from as long as $3.45 into $3. This has resulted in the Broncos drifting from $1.28 out to $1.40.
Betting in this match looks rather straightforward. Ignoring controversy related to officiating, the Broncos put the Knights to the sword in Newcastle last week, winning 36-12. Not only are the Titans a similar calibre of side to the Knights, but the Broncos return home to Suncorp on Friday. Young gun will also benefit from his first run in the NRL, and with improvement coming in this Broncos outfit, they look a great bet to win by 13+ points, paying $2.45 at BetOnline.

The emergence of Selwyn Cobbo this season has been incredible to watch this season. Both his attitude in defence and his incredible ability in attack is often compared to the likes of Greg Inglis. Cobbo has scored an incredible seven tries in his last three games, which have included wins over Manly and South Sydney. Not only can Cobbo get under a kick or on the outside of his opposing defender to score, but he pops up in the right place at the right time, something that simply can’t be coached. Cobbo is sitting at $5 to score two or more tries on Friday, something he could do with ease given the weapons at his disposal.
Cobbo would not be scoring the tries he does without Kotoni Staggs inside him. Staggs is as much, if not more of an offensive threat, and given Cobbo’s form, Staggs could go unmarked at points on Friday night. Staggs has also been in incredible form of late in defence, making the right reads at the right times to shut down his opposing centre or five-eighth and the play they’re running. This gives the opportunity for Staggs to score more tries than Brian Kelly Friday, which is great value at $2.95.
A dry track at Suncorp will surely be the scene of a high scoring match on Friday night. For all the attacking threats the Broncos have, the Titans should not be forgotten in the talent they have. Points for Brisbane alone have come easy in the last three weeks as they’ve exceeded 32 total points by themselves. This should see Friday’s match go well over the total points of 41.5.
Key matchup: Pat Carrigan vs Tino Fa’asuamaleaui
The battle of these two lock forwards will be most intriguing not only for this clash, but as an audition for the Queensland State of Origin team. Both players can lock the middle third of the field up with their defence, as well as blow it wide open with their attack. Whether it’s their strong ball carries through the middle, or subtle ball skills to bring players around them onto the ball through the middle, these two men are incredible players. Whoever outplays the other on Friday will go a long way to securing a starting lock spot for the Maroons and winning the game for their club.
