The Brisbane Broncos will need to put a controversial week behind them when the Sydney Roosters head north for their Round 5 clash at Suncorp Stadium.
The Broncos have struggled in recent weeks and come in as a $4.50 outsider with online bookmakers, but their recent record against the Roosters suggests they are in with some kind of hope.
A one-point loss in 2021, a five-point win in 2019 and a six-point loss in 2018 during an era of Roosters’ dominance suggests the result isn’t quite the fait accompli many are predicting, but with Tom Flegler and Patrick Carrigan ruled out with suspension and injury, it leaves Brisbane short of impactful middle forwards.
The other statistics that points to a Roosters win is the fact they’ve won their last 11 straight games interstate as the betting favourite.
The Roosters decided to stay in Queensland following a 28-4 win over the Cowboys rather than fly back to Sydney, and it could prove to be something of a turning point to get their season headed on the right track.
They were inconsistent in the opening three weeks but their win in Townsville was the clinical performance many fans and punters have come to expect, and the betting markets have reacted accordingly, coming in as a $1.28 favourite.
Coach Trent Robinson is still tinkering with his line-up and it sees Angus Crichton remain on the bench in favour of Sitili Tupouniua and Nat Butcher.

There will be a game in the coming weeks where Crichton is promoted back to the starting side, but against a Brisbane side lacking experience, it likely shapes as a rotational decision that won’t have a huge bearing on the result.
Lindsay Collins is also set to start from the bench, which shows the embarrassment of riches the Tricolours have when a walk-up start to the Queensland State of Origin team is wearing jersey 17.
When it comes to finding a try scorer, Daniel Tupou is one name who most fans turn to. It did come as a surprise to see he has just five tries in 16 appearance against the Broncos, so who to turn to? Luke Keary has a better than 50% strike rate against Brisbane, but maybe we can get a nice return on Sam Walker at $4? A game against the club who let him walk away will no doubt bring out the best in the young prodigy.
Brisbane have been in more negative headlines with an argument between Payne Haas and Albert Kelly becoming public knowledge. Their last two performances have also put enormous pressure on the club, producing a lethargic effort against the Warriors after they were blown off the park by the Cowboys. This feels like a sink or swim game for the Broncos in 2021, are they an improved team or will they be in for another long season where the rubbish sets in early and their opponents know they wave the white flag.
Their attack has been dire in recent weeks, and it does look a tall order to score consistently against an improving Roosters side, but Brisbane’s best value to score a try is Kurt Capewell at $8.50 on an edge. He can easily punch a hole in the channel that exists on the outside shoulder of either half in the Roosters side, who are both undersized.
Broncos vs Roosters predictions & best bets
The Roosters make it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2022 and get a 13+ win at Suncorp Stadium. The depth in the middle forwards gives them a huge advantage, and Payne Haas can only carry so much of a load.

The Roosters by 13+ with Kevin Naiqama, Sam Walker and Kurt Capewell to all score tries pays an absurd $51 at Marantelli Bet.
