Round 17 preview: Brisbane vs Adelaide

Brisbane have the perfect opportunity to continue their charge to the AFL finals when they host Adelaide at the Gabba in the twilight slot on Sunday evening.

The Lions enter as strong favourites at $1.21 with BoomBet, while the Crows offer a value selection at $4.60 with Bet365. The $1.90 line is set at 28.5 points.

Last Friday, Brisbane secured their fourth consecutive victory as they beat Melbourne by five points at the Gabba. After a slow start, the Lions rallied late, kicking five of the last six goals to sneak home.

As a result, Chris Fagan’s men have entered the top eight for the first time this season. AFL bookmakers expect this form to continue, with odds of $2.50 for Brisbane to finish in the top four.

Just one change is expected for the Lions as key defender Jack Payne returns from a foot injury, likely in place of Darragh Joyce.

The Crows also won in round 16, beating GWS by 16 points at Adelaide Oval. In a strong all-round performance, Adelaide’s inaccuracy meant the final margin flattered the Giants.

A rare positive performance in a disappointing season, the 14th-placed Crows should be planning for their future over the last two months of the season. However, with wins over top-eight sides Carlton and Port Adelaide, they could be a tricky test for a finals contender.

There are a couple of inclusions for Matthew Nicks’ side this week, with defensive pair Brodie Smith and James Borlase returning. Will Hamill is a confirmed out with a broken finger.

Lions v Crows betting tips & strategy

Although the last match between these sides ended in a draw, Brisbane have since improved to become one of the form sides in the AFL. They have won their last four matches at the Gabba by an average of 45 points, so back the Lions to cover the 28.5 handicap at $1.91 with online bookmakers.

Star midfielder Lachie Neale has been a key driver of Brisbane’s recent success. Excluding when he was tagged by St Kilda in round 14, the two-time Brownlow Medal winner has averaged 34 disposals per game across the last six weeks. With the Brisbane midfield expected to get on top in this clash, back Neale to collect 30 or more disposals at $2.15 with Neds Australia.

Adelaide half-back Mitch Hinge has taken his game to another level of late, averaging 32 disposals in the past fortnight. The 26-year-old is a key part of the Crows’ uncontested game coming out from defence, while his disposal tally is boosted by taking the majority of kick-ins. Facing his former side, back Hinge to continue his excellent form with 30 or more disposals at $2.50.
