Bowman suspended at Warwick Farm

Hugh Bowman has been suspended for his winning ride on Tswalu at Warwick Farm.

Hugh Bowman will miss the Breeders Classic meeting through a suspension which ends in time for him to ride Winx in her return in the Apollo Stakes.

Bowman was outed for his winning ride on Tswalu at Warwick Farm on Friday after pleading guilty to shifting in at the 900m and causing interference to two other runners.

His ban begins on February 4, the day after the Group Two Expressway Stakes meeting, and ends on February 15, two days before the champion’s scheduled return.

The champion jockey has a busy weekend with rides at Saturday’s Karaka Million meeting at Ellerslie in New Zealand before he heads to Sha Tin in Hong Kong to ride Werther in the Stewards’ Cup and Lucky Bubbles in the Centenary Sprint Cup on Sunday.

Bowman also rode Bejing Board to win at Warwick Farm but premiership leader Brenton Avdulla took riding honours with three winners including Cordero in in the day’s feature, the Australia Day Cup.

Trained by Hawkes Racing and owned by George Cloros, Cordero ($2.80 fav) racked up his fourth straight win and third consecutive victory over 2400 metres when he beat Dee I Cee and veteran Destiny’s Kiss.

The Cup was presented by retired jockey Ray Selkrig who was celebrating his inclusion in the Australia Day honours with a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Selkrig rode successfully from 1947 to 1983 and won the 1961 Melbourne Cup on Lord Fury.

Leading apprentice Rachel King rode Nat King Cu to win the final race and now has just two wins left before she outrides her claim.
