Boomers locked in for Paris Olympics in 2024
The Australian Boomers have secured qualification for next year’s Paris Olympics and will look to build on their bronze medal finish at the Tokyo Games.
Following New Zealand’s loss to Greece at the FIBA Basketball World Cup on Wednesday night, Australia clinched the top spot in the Oceania group, earning automatic qualification for the 2024 Olympics.
The national men’s basketball team made history by winning bronze at the 2020 Olympics, beating Slovenia 107-93 to finish on the podium for the time.
In that game, captain Patty Mills justified his selection as a flag-bearer at the opening ceremony by sinking 42 points and nine assists.
The Boomers have competed in every Olympic Games since 1972, reaching five semi-finals and another six quarter-finals.
The Aussies are only the second team to have qualified for next year’s Olympics, along with France as the host nation, with 10 spots left to be filled.
Europe and the Americas each have two dedicated spots, while Africa, Asia, and Oceania each receive one qualifying ticket.
The last four slots will be allocated in the upcoming summer through the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
