Big winners & losers from 2017 A-League Grand Final betting

A-League Grand Final betting wrap
SYDNEY FC are the 2016-17 A-League champions after edging out Melbourne Victory on penalties in a cracker grand final clash.

It was a fitting end to a superb season for the Sky Blues, who were defeated only once throughout the campaign.

They were short-priced favourites to lift the trophy, with plenty of punters cashing in at -270.27 odds at online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au.

Those who went a step further and took the plunge on Sydney to win via penalties were rewarded with a very handsome +1100 return.

Also well off were those who tipped the scores to be tied at the end of regulation time, which paid +250.

The 1-1 result after 90 minutes saw the Victory meet their +1.0 handicap and earn backers a -109.89 payout, but there were far richer markets to be enjoyed on the visitors’ side of the ledger.

Besart Berisha’s opener after 20 minutes was worth a +650 return in the first goalscorer stakes and +210 for those who tipped the Albanian striker to score at anytime.

It also saw the Victory head into the sheds at half-time with a 1-0 lead, which was excellent news for anyone who took the +350 quote on the underdogs to be ahead at the interval.

The second half was a killer for punters who picked Kevin Muscat’s men to get the job done in regulation time.

Sydney levelled the scores with a little over 20 minutes remaining, courtesy of Rhyan Grant – a +1800 beauty for the few lucky ducks who had money on the defender to find the back of the net.

While we cannot be certain a single punter got on these markets, Grant also paid +3500 as Sydney’s first goalscorer and a whopping +5000 as the last goalscorer in regulation time.

That was how it stayed until the final whistle, which triggered a +550 win on 1-1 correct score bets and an even tastier +1300 payout on the half-time/full-time result double.

But perhaps the shock of the night came in the Joe Marston Medal betting.

Despite his side’s shootout defeat, Victory defender Daniel Georgievski was named best on ground for his classy, composed and combative display in a match packed with tough tackling and constant pressure.

The Macedonia international, who is on his way to Newcastle Jets next season, started the night as a +2200 outsider for the award.
