Bel Sonic on song for return at Caulfield

The Jason Warren-trained three-year-old Bel Sonic will make his return to racing at Caulfield.

Trainer Jason Warren expects the cooler weather in Melbourne to suit promising three-year-old Bel Sonic ahead of his racing return at Caulfield.

Bel Sonic runs first-up over 1200m on Saturday after a failed trip to the Gold Coast in January.

The three-year-old won his way north with successive victories at Pakenham and Moonee Valley the previous month but was unplaced in the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).

“It was very hot at the Gold Coast and he over-heated,” Warren said.

“He pulled up a bit jarred up from the run as well.

“We gave him a month up there at Aquis Farm to recover and then he came home.”

Warren has given the gelding a steady build-up which has included solid performances in jump-outs at Sandown and Balnarring to boost his fitness levels.

While happy with his progress, Warren says there is still plenty of improvement to come.

“I had a bit of trouble with his feet after going to Queensland but we’ve got all that under control now,” Warren said.

“He’s done really well but he’s not fully wound-up yet.

“His trials at Sandown and Balnarring last week have been encouraging so he’s ready to kick off again, but I think he’ll improve a lot with the run.”

Warren says he will be guided by Bel Sonic’s return as to whether the gelding makes a return trip to Brisbane later in his campaign.

He has already picked out a 1200m-race at Moonee Valley on June 2 as the gelding’s next assignment, part of the A R Creswick Series for sprinting three-year-olds.

Joining Bel Sonic at Caulfield will be Dixie Preacher in the 2000m race for three-year-olds.

Dixie Preacher holds a nomination for Saturday’s South Australian Derby at Morphettville but Warren says the gelding will be staying home for the easier option.

The three-year-old was a last-start winner over 2046m at Benalla on April 27.

“The Derby looks too strong so we’ll go to Caulfield instead,” Warren said.

“He won’t look out of place there for sure.”
