Begg has high hopes for Written By

Trainer Grahame Begg is convinced Written By has a bright future and the colt has shown why with an impressive start to his career at Sandown.

Written By ($9) scored by a length over Sanctimonious ($5.50) in the Cameron Thurley’s Bucks Day Plate (1000m) in heavy conditions on Saturday, with Logan River ($5) another long head away.

Written By is by stallion Written Tycoon out of Yau Chin and was bred by the trainer’s father, Neville, who part-owns the colt.

A former trainer, 86-year-old Neville Begg is in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Grahame Begg believes Written By could measure up in the autumn two-year-old races.

“This horse has shown us well-above-average ability all the way through,” he said.

“He’s had a bit of a stop-start start to his career. He won a jump-out at Mornington but didn’t get passed (to race) because he had a few barrier antics.

“We had to send him back to Shane Stockdale to put some more polish on him and he did a fantastic job.

“The horse is a very resilient type of horse to be able to put up with everything and still get to the races just after the spring carnival.

“He’s got a very bright future.”

Begg said the $500,000 Inglis Nursery in Sydney in two weeks was an option.

“It’s a conundrum whether we go there or whether we put him away for the autumn,” he said.

The victory was a pick-up ride for in-form Jordan Childs, who rode a winning treble on Friday night at Moonee Valley.

Brad Rawiller was suspended at Moonee Valley and relinquished the ride so he could begin the ban straight away in order to be back to ride Black Heart Bart in the Group One Kingston Town Stakes in Perth next Saturday.
