Australia wins gold in Men’s Team Pursuit, equals Olympic record
Australia’s team of Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy, and Kelland O’Brien clinched the gold medal in the men’s Team Pursuit cycling at the Paris Olympics on Thursday morning.
This victory is Australia’s first in this event since the 2004 Athens Games.
The Australian squad set a world record in the event earlier on Wednesday at 3:40.730 and came close to repeating that feat in the final, where the bookmaker favourites posted a time of 3:42.067.
It was a great win for Australia, as they outperformed their rivals, Great Britain.
The final race was intense and neck-and-neck for most of the 3.5 kilometres, until a slight touch by GB’s wheel on the last lap cost them dearly.
The Australians took advantage of this mishap, surging ahead to finish over two seconds ahead.
With this gold medal in Men’s Team Pursuit, Australia has now secured a total of 17 gold medals, matching their ever performance at the Games.
This victory follows achievements by Keegan Palmer in Men’s skateboard park and Matt Wearn in the Men’s Dinghy.
