Australia will look to go 2-0 in the Super 12 stage of the 2021 T20 World Cup when they face Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Stadium in the wee hours of Friday morning (AEDT).
The Aussies delivered a mixed bag against South Africa in their opening game, holding the Proteas to 9/118 and then needing just about every bit of the 20 overs to chase it down.
While the bowling unit of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa functioned to near-perfection, the Australia’s batting performance left onlookers with more questions than answers.
The middle order delivered, especially Steve Smith (34) and match-winner Marcus Stoinis (24*), but the top order of Aaron Finch (0), David Warner (14) and Mitch Marsh (11) failed to fire.

Aussie fans will want to see a more complete display when Justin Langer’s charges take on a Sri Lanka outfit that hasn’t put a foot wrong so far.
After winning through the first round with comfortable results against Ireland and the Netherlands, Dasun Shanaka’s side made a positive start to the Super 12 phase by reeling in a target of 172 against Bangladesh.
Charith Asalanka (80*) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (53) starred with the bat in that game, while Chamika Karunaratne (1/12) was the clear standout in an otherwise scattered bowling effort from the Lankans.
Australia hold clear favouritism in the head-to-head markets at most T20 cricket betting sites, although more than a few pundits are tipping that Sri Lanka can spring an upset.
Australia vs Sri Lanka betting predictions
Top Australia runscorer: Mitchell Marsh
He missed out against South Africa, but the word around the Aussie camp is that Mitch Marsh is in super touch. There are few better strikers of the ball than Marsh in full flight, and if he gets a chance to settle in against this underwhelming Sri Lanka bowling attack, we could see him dispatch a few into the stands.
Mitchell Marsh top runscorer
Match result: Australia
If the Aussies are to have any designs on the 2021 T20 World Cup title, they simply must win this game. It feels like the battle between Australia’s star bowlers and Sri Lanka’s power hitters will decide this one, and we are backing in Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and co. to get it done. Also look for some improvement from the Aussie top order.
Australia to win
