With the T20 World Cup only weeks away, Australia will be looking to chalk up some wins when they host the West Indies and England this week. First, the reigning world champions take on the Windies at Carrara this Wednesday night.
Australia were competitive across their recent series of matches against India, losing 2-1 after a heartbreaking last over in the decider. Cameron Green was the standout for the Aussies in that game. Based on home ground advantage, the Aussies are listed as the favourites to take out the looming World Cup. The team has benefitted greatly from the number of local players running through the Big Bash League, which has unearthed some impressive T20 talent.
The current wider squad includes short-game specialists such as Ashton Agar, Tim David, Kane Richardson, and Marcus Stoinis who are professional 20-over cricketers that do not play the red ball version of the game. A solid performance here should help with selection and other fine-tuning.
The West Indies enter this match after a reasonably competitive ODI series against New Zealand that the Kiwis won 2-1. Game three saw both teams belt over 300 runs, so the Windies are certainly capable of posting big totals when their batting lineup hits form. They are currently listed at $13 for the World Cup, based on their often hot and cold efforts.
It is expected that inconsistency across the tournament will be their undoing. The Windies’ chances here will likely depend on an ability to find the boundaries, given their often leaky bowling lineup. Watch out for Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran to do the heavy hitting. Batting first and setting an imposing run chase might be their best bet.
We are tipping the Aussies to get over the line at Carrara.
