Arrogate upsets Chrome in BC Classic

Arrogate has overhauled 4-5 favourite California Chrome in the final strides to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

It was California Chrome’s first defeat in seven starts this year.

California Chrome and Victor Espinoza led most of the 1-1/4-mile (2000m) race on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).

Around the final turn, Arrogate took up the chase, with Mike Smith riding vigorously, the pair caught California Chrome to win by half a length.

The win gave Smith his third Breeders’ Cup victory of the two-day meeting and the 25th of his illustrious career while trainer Bob Baffert racked up a third consecutive win in the Classic.
