Wimbledon 2024: Bolt v Ruud preview

Two players hoping to make a winning start to Wimbledon 2024 are Australia’s Alex Bolt and No.8 seed Casper Ruud, who square off in round one on Monday.

On paper, this doesn’t seem like a particularly fair contest: world No.8 taking on world No.234. However, there is good reason to expect an upset.

Bolt has been very active on the grass over the past month, playing in two events ahead of Wimbledon.

Due to his low ranking, he has had to make his way through qualifying in each event.

He’s done so successfully, reaching the main draw of the Surbiton Challengers before doing so again at the Nottingham Open. While he lost first round in Surbiton, he picked up an opening win in Nottingham over Jan Choinski.

At Wimbledon, Bolt navigated his way through qualifying with three impressive wins, the last of which went to a fifth set.

Ruud, on the other hand, hasn’t set a foot on grass this year. His most recent match was at the French Open over a month ago, when he made the semi-finals.

And while the Norwegian is one of the top players on the ATP Tour, grass is his kryptonite.

He holds a 36.4% win rate on the surface, compared to 58.2% on hard courts and 74.2% on clay. In fact, he’s only ever won four matches on grass, from a total of 11 across his career.

It’s not just that Ruud rarely plays on grass; his game is ill-suited to the surface. His heavy topspin forehand is neutralised by the skidding bounce, taking away his biggest weapon.

Add in the fact that he struggles with movement on grass, and it’s no surprise Ruud has never made it beyond the second round of Wimbledon.

Wimbledon 2024: Bolt v Ruud betting predictions

We expect Bolt to score a big upset in this match. Ruud simply hasn’t put the effort in to improve on grass, where his record is abysmal.

Bolt, on the other hand, is riding a three-match win streak having made his way through qualifying and played 11 matches on the surface in the past month.

All things considered, the +245 price at Neds for Bolt to win is hard to ignore.

He won’t have it all his own way against a player of Ruud’s class, however, so over 40.5 total games (-109.89) and five sets played (-109.89) are both solid bets.
