AFL Round 2 betting news, match odds & market update

Latest AFL odds

The 2020 AFL Premiership season is set to resume at last after a months-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first round back is loaded with rivalry clashes and could well be the most important week of the revamped fixture. Let’s take a look at the matchups, talking points and AFL betting odds for round two.

Collingwood vs Richmond

Although there won’t be the usual crowd of 80,000 or so, you couldn’t have selected a better first match of the round than this clash between Collingwood and Richmond at the MCG. Damian Hardwick’s Tigers start the betting slightly ahead at $1.60, giving Nathan Buckley’s Magpies $2.28 odds to upset the reigning premiers.

Geelong vs Hawthorn

The rivalry between Geelong and Hawthorn has reached new heights since the 2008 AFL Grand Final. They have played belter after belter from that day one, and we hope this game will be no different. The Cats have the early lead in the betting at $1.56, but the Hawks could win as outsiders at $2.44 like they did in round one against the Brisbane Lions.

Brisbane Lions vs Fremantle

Lachie Neale will be ready to go against his old club when the Brisbane Lions host Fremantle to kickstart the Saturday schedule. The Lions are ready to take the next step this season and could deal a punishing blow to the Dockers. You can jump on the favoured Brisbane at $1.34, with Freo as the big outsider at $3.29 to cause an upset.

Carlton vs Melbourne

Both of these teams are expecting big changes in 2020, but who will come out and make the big statement first? We like the line up Carlton will bring to this match, but you cannot count out the Demons and their talented midfield. The money lies with Melbourne at $1.56, pushing the Blues out to $2.43.

Port Adelaide vs Adelaide

A handful of strings were pulled to make this happen, but we can happily say the South Australian Showdown is ready to rumble this Saturday night. While there is far less excitement surrounding the Power and Crows this season, we think the young stars for Port Adelaide could make a huge difference in their second seasons. The bookmakers also like the Power at $1.47, leaving the rebuilding Adelaide at $2.68.

Gold Coast Suns vs West Coast

The battle of the coasts is not yet a big celebration of football, considering one team is a perennial favourite for the wooden spoon and the other is a regular contender for the flag. There is no telling what the Gold Coast draftees can produce on game day as we haven’t seen them in action, but you can expect the Eagles to return to their premiership form of 2018 with an early confidence boost. The shortest odds for the round go to West Coast at $1.13, meaning the longest price is with the Suns at a whopping $6.05.

GWS Giants vs North Melbourne

Sunday’s set of matches are all very exciting, but this first match between the GWS Giants and North Melbourne could get ugly. Rhyce Shaw is building a strong reputation at Arden Street, so we expect the Kangaroos to put up a good fight against the 2019 grand finalists. The Giants start as $1.35 favourites, with the Roos at $3.23 to win on the road.

Sydney Swans vs Essendon

Plenty of matches between these two have gone down to the wire in recent years, and this one is a big chance to do the same. Lance Franklin won’t play for the Sydney Swans, but the Bombers have their own injury worries with Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, Orazio Fantasia and Jake Stringer all in doubt. The betting is very even for this matchup, with the Swans slightly ahead at $1.81 and Essendon paying $2.04.

St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs

The final match of round two will be one of the best the weekend has to offer, especially if St Kilda can find rhythm early. The Western Bulldogs are bullish about 2020 and think they can have a strong impact later in the year, but they’ll need to make a huge improvement from their round one struggles. The Dogs are $1.54 favourites to beat the $2.49 Saints.

AFL 2020 Premiership betting

We won’t see another premiership season that compares to 2020. With a 17-match format and shortened game times, it will be do-or-die from the first week back.

The Tigers stay cemented as the premiership favourites at $4.50 with Sportsbet, but those odds could change if Collingwood ($6.50) topple them at the ‘G this Thursday.

Outside of Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs, we can’t see any teams making a big push in the betting, but the chaotic nature of this season could see someone like Melbourne or St Kilda climb as the year progresses.

$4.50 – Richmond
$6 – West Coast
$6.50 – Collingwood
$7.50 – Greater Western Sydney
$15 – Brisbane Lions, Geelong
$18 – Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs
$21 – Port Adelaide
