AFL Round 17 Twitter wrap – Dangerfield plays God & Daniher soars

AFL Twitter chat for Australia

EVERY week, the 2017 AFL season adds more drama, intrigue and of course, bizarre results.

With 15 rounds in the book, there are still 12 teams with a legitimate claim to finals football, just one win separates fourth from ninth on the ladder and the premiership race is as wide open as the competition has seen for many years.

In a year that continually produces upsets, thrillers, heroes and villains, there was no shortage of heartbreak and absolute joy for punters this week.

How do the major AFL markets look with seven weeks to go?

Like its predecessors, Round 16 provided everything that football fans could hope for.

We had a pair of Saturday afternoon thrillers, contenders for both mark and goal of the year, an individual performance for the ages, a reality check for the Saints, a premiership contender feeling the heat and the continued resurgence of the dark horse Swans.

As always, we’ve taken to Twitter to provide the full story, warts and all.

Essendon star Joe Daniher kicked off Round 17 with one of the marks of the year. Going into the match as underdogs, Essendon was able to take the sword to the sluggish Saints, which had a 120-point turnaround from its 10-goal victory the week before.

If ever there was a reminder to put your phone away while watching live sport, this was it.

Daniher managed to carry his early momentum throughout the match, winning best on ground honours and accolades from all quarters.

The Saturday afternoon clash between the Cats and Hawks marked Luke Hodge’s 300th – but all of the attention was focused on one man, Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Dangerfield.

After coming off second best from a heavy clash in the first term, Dangerfield was carried from the ground and disappeared to the change rooms.

It didn’t look good for the champ.

But what followed will go down in football history.

Dangerfield, seemingly on one leg, was thrown to full forward where he dominated, kicking 5.5 to inspire his team past a plucky Hawks side.

The focus then turned to two coaches under the pump when Collingwood took on the Suns at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Things got off to a weird start with the Suns banner.

The game itself didn’t reach any great heights, but the Pies got the chocolates and Nathan Buckley survived another week.

Our goal of the week comes from Melbourne live-wire Jayden Hunt.

The flanker took it upon himself to launch a 70 metre strike on the siren against Port Adelaide on Saturday night, giving his team hope and reminding footy fans of the game’s greatest long bombs.
