Round 8: Adelaide v Port Adelaide match preview

One of the fiercest rivalries in the AFL kicks off round eight when the Crows host the surging Power at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.

The Adelaide Crows are coming off a soft 57-point win against the lowly Kangaroos at Marvel Stadium. Adelaide generated an impressive 60 inside 50s and outmarked the hapless Roos with 23 contested grabs and 24 marks inside the forward arc. The Crows have been inconsistent in 2024 with just two wins to be languishing in 12th spot on the ladder.

Adelaide forward Luke Pedlar dislocated his shoulder in the win over the Kangaroos and will be out for some time. However, Lachlan Murphy looked pain-free in his return from a knee problem in the SANFL, while rookie Dan Curtin grabbed 31 disposals to press his case for selection. Former Suns forward Chris Burgess was another standout for the reserves, booting four goals.

Port Adelaide continued their solid form to grind out a 10-point win over the Saints in round seven. Despite the close margin, the Power managed to lift their intensity whenever challenged and were content to keep their nose in front in the final quarter. Port were too strong in the centre of the ground, winning the hitout, clearance, and disposal counts.

The Power paid a high price for their win over the Saints. Dynamic forward Sam Powell-Pepper tore his ACL, captain Connor Rozee suffered a minor hamstring strain, and defender Aliir Aliir must complete concussion protocols for a head knock. Tom Clurey, Ryan Burton, and Jed McEntee look to be likely replacements after being held back from the reserves for this blockbuster.

Adelaide v Port Adelaide R8 betting strategy

The Power will struggle to fill the void left by Rozee and Powell-Pepper. Adelaide also appear to be improving in recent weeks with a win over the Blues, a narrow loss to the Bombers, and the win over the Kangaroos. Derbies are rarely won by big margins, so the Crows to get up by 39 points or less looks like nice value at $2.60 with Unibet.

Crows midfielder Lachlan Sholl threw up some big numbers in round seven with 29 disposals, five marks, and a goal. Against a depleted Port side, he could find plenty of space again. At $2.05 with Neds, Sholl is a decent play in the anytime goalkicker market.

If the Crows get off to a clean start, there is a good chance they will lead at the main break. That brings the halftime/fulltime double into play at $2.70 with the top online bookmakers.
