Wonder mare Winx returns to the public eye for trial run

Winx Australia
AUSTRALIA’S best race horse, Winx, returns to the track on Tuesday morning for its first barrier trial at Rosehill Gardens.

The five-year-old returns for a public trial for the first time since its astonishing eight-length Cox Plate victory, backing up its victory in 2015 in a display that many dubbed the greatest win the race’s history.

In what is sure to be one of the most-watched barrier trials of the year, Winx takes to the turf at 8.15am. The dual Cox Plate champion is one of six horses Waller has in the opening trial designated for Group and Listed winners over 900m.

The wonder mare will be looking to win its 14th straight race as it renews the rivalry alongside Hartnell in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick on February 11.

Despite the imposing record his horse possesses, Chris Waller believes the burden is not as heavy on Winx heading into the autumn.

“There was the pressure of proving herself last year,” Waller said.

“She has now won that second Cox Plate, she won with a big weight in a handicap in the Doncaster and has done it for an extended period.

“Horses can hit a purple patch of form for six or 12 months and drop off, but she has proven herself beyond that and is very special. I think we can enjoy her now. Our aim is to plan her runs so there will be longevity and everyone can enjoy her for a few more years yet.”

Last time mare resumed there was concerns whether Winx could make a successful return from fetlock surgery, but Waller said there is no consternation heading into a fresh campaign.

“Her body language is good but it is her first pre-season game in a sense, so we want her to just go around without being put under too much pressure,” the champion trainer said.

“There is not the doubt of injury this time, so we can feel a little more confident.”
