Fifth T20: West Indies v Australia preview
Australia will look to complete a clean sweep of their Caribbean tour when they face the West Indies at Warner Park in the fifth and final game of their T20I series on Tuesday (AEST).
After winning both Test matches, the visitors have gone 4-0 in the white-ball games despite missing several walk-up starters.
Glenn Maxwell has flourished at the top of the order in place of Travis Head, Cameron Green is looking more and more comfortable as a top-four batter on the international stage, and the likes of Tim David and Mitchell Owen have provided plenty of middle-order firepower.
The bowlers have been a little more hit-and-miss, with Sean Abbott in particular taking a beating in the last game, but the Aussies will be happy with their overall performance while testing out their squad depth.
For the West Indies, it’s all come down to an inability to defend a total — whatever the total.
Batting first four games in a row hasn’t helped, but they have passed 200 twice and still haven’t done enough in the field to get the job done.
Online bookmakers have the hosts at $2.66 odds to snap their losing streak and salvage some pride, with Australia paying $1.46 to make it 5-0 with another win in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
West Indies team news
The only selection question for the West Indies is whether they opt for the seam-up bowling Matthew Forde or the orthodox spin of Gudakesh Motie. Otherwise, expect no changes.
West Indies’ expected XI:
- Brandon King
- Shai Hope (c, wk)
- Roston Chase
- Sherfane Rutherford
- Rovman Powell
- Shimron Hetmyer
- Romario Shepherd
- Jason Holder
- Matthew Forde
- Akeal Hossein
- Jediah Blades
Australia team news
Tim David was rested after his record-shattering century in the third game, but he is expected to return for the series finale. Young allrounder Cooper Connolly will almost certainly make way after contributing little in Sunday’s clash.
Australia’s expected XI:
- Mitchell Marsh (c)
- Glenn Maxwell
- Josh Inglis (wk)
- Cameron Green
- Mitchell Owen
- Tim David
- Aaron Hardie
- Nathan Ellis
- Xavier Bartlett
- Sean Abbott
- Adam Zampa
Fifth T20: West Indies v Australia match predictions
There isn’t a lot of value in the head-to-head market, but the lines might offer something. T20 cricket betting sites have the West Indies’ over/under set at 185.5 — and as they have passed that mark in three of four games this series, you could do worse than take the $1.90 on offer.
Josh Inglis continues to show why the Australian selectors have him ahead of Alex Carey in white-ball cricket. The West Australian wicketkeeper has 162 runs for the series while striking at better than 210, and at $3.45 with BetOnline, there is obvious value in backing him to hit his third half-century of the tour.
Adam Zampa has taken a bit of stick in the last two games, but the veteran leg-spinner continues to take regular wickets. While there is a chance the Aussies will rest him and instead give Matthew Kuhnemann a run, it’s still worth looking at the $4.30 on offer at BetOnline for Zampa to be Australia’s top wicket-taker once again.
