The Western Bulldogs will fly across the country for their round 11 clash this Saturday against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium.
Before the season began you could have predicted this matchup would be one of the best games of the weekend, but with the Eagles sitting 18th on the ladder and the Bulldogs outside the top eight, it is far from a marquee fixture.
The Eagles currently rank 18th in the competition for points against despite having one of the strongest backlines in the league, as they have somehow conceded an average of 111.5 points per match.
A lot of the goals West Coast has conceded could be attributed to poor pressure up the ground, as their midfield group has been ravaged by injuries and COVID isolation.
What makes the Bulldogs a top tier team in full flight is their first-class midfield, as players like Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore and Josh Dunkley give them a depth that can overrun most teams in the AFL.
To make matters worse for Adam Simpson and the Eagles, Luke Beveridge confirmed Tim English will make his return, adding another huge asset to the already powerful Bulldogs midfield.
English could give a huge advantage to the likes of Jack Macrae and Bailey Smith in the middle, who each could be in for a big night out on the stat sheet.
Key matchup: Jeremy McGovern vs Aaron Naughton
Both Jeremy McGovern and Aaron Naughton love to fly at the footy in the air and are very good at it. McGovern is the best intercepting defender in the AFL and has been a shining light for the Eagles in defence, but can he do enough this week to negate an in-form Dogs star?
Naughton has kicked 10 goals in the last three weeks and also registered six behinds in the same period. If the tall Bulldog keeps up his good work and gets involved early, there is no telling how many goals he may kick. McGovern will try to stop the young star, but his size may be an issue.
West Coast vs Western Bulldogs betting tips
Western Bulldogs to win by 1-39
The Eagles have played their last six games like a reserves squad, but we think they can turn their luck around this week and put up a genuine fight on their home deck. The combination of Tom Barrass and Jeremy McGovern is always going to be hard to beat, while the return of Josh Kennedy up forward will provide an experienced avenue to goal.
Western Bulldogs to win by 1-39
Aaron Naughton 3+ goals
Naughton has kicked three or more goals in five matches so far this season, which includes each of his last three outings. Although he may struggle in one-on-one situations against McGovern, we think his speed will be the difference. Naughton should find plenty of space to lead and mark inside 50 for the Doggies, which will see the key forward kick another mini-bag of goals. He is also paying a nice $1.72 with Aussie online bookmakers, which is nice value against an undermanned Eagles team.
Aaron Naughton 3+ goals
Same game multi: 3 legs @ $8.24
The Bulldogs will win easy this Saturday against an undermanned and disinterested Eagles outfit, with Aaron Naughton to star up forward and Brownlow fancy Bailey Smith to keep up the good work in the midfield.
Western Bulldogs 1-39 / Naughton 3+ goals / B Smith 30+ disposals
