Warriors v Broncos match preview

Saturday afternoon football for round 17 of the NRL kicks off at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium with the New Zealand Warriors and Brisbane Broncos both looking to break losing streaks.

The Broncos have lost consecutive games to the Titans, Sharks and Rabbitohs, all by 10 points or less. The visitors will need to find winning form fast if they are to get their season back on track and secure a top-four finish on the NRL ladder.

Meanwhile, the Warriors need wins if they wish to make a return to finals football this season. However, having conceded 66 points to the Titans last weekend, it seems unlikely they will be able to make a deep run.

Injuries continue to plague the Warriors, with coach Andrew Webster missing Shaun Johnson (Achilles). However, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak returns from suspension to play on the wing in place of Edward Kosi, Te Maire Martin takes over halfback duties with Chanel Harris-Tavita named at five-eighth, and Mitchell Barnett is set to start in the second row.

Dylan Walker has been pushed back to the bench, while Freddy Lussick and Kurt Capewell have been added to the side in place of Tom Ale and Jacob Laban. Bunty Afoa drops out of the team altogether.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters welcomes back Jesse Arthars and Selwyn Cobbo, with Corey Oates making way and Josiah Karapani dropping to the interchange. Xavier Willison has been named to start in the front row, Jack Gosiewski replaces the suspended Jordan Riki, and Kobe Hetherington lines up at lock.

Fletcher Baker and Martin Taupau have been added to the bench. With State of Origin stars Reece Walsh, Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan all named in the extended reserves, there could be some late changes.

Warriors v Broncos predictions

The Broncos have won three of their last five matches against the Warriors, including one last season during the State of Origin series without their superstar players. Although the underdogs have won eight of New Zealand’s last nine matches, the Broncos will be expected to cover the 3.5-point line with top bookie Neds.

Despite his team’s form, Broncos winger Deine Mariner has scored three tries to lift his season total to 12 in as many games. He is one of the fastest wingers in the NRL, with an uncanny ability to find ways to score in sorts of situations. At $1.62 with online bookmakers, Mariner is a safe bet to add to his try tally.

At the same time the Broncos are looking to regain some form, they’re also taking on a wounded Warriors team lacking in confidence. In each of their last two losses, the Wahs have trailed at half-time before going on to lose the match. Look for that trend to continue with the Broncos completing the half-time/full-time double at $2 with PlayUp.
