Wallabies receive boost ahead of do-or-die Wales clash
Wallabies vice-captain Tate McDermott says he is prepared for the pivotal Rugby World Cup encounter with Wales this coming Monday (AEST).
This declaration comes after McDermott sat out Australia’s surprising 22-15 loss to Fiji in Saint-Etienne due to a head injury he sustained in their 35-15 victory against Georgia in Paris.
The Wallabies must win this clash to remain in the RWC tournament, with bookmakers pricing them a $1.80 favourite, while Wales are at $2.
During McDermott’s absence in the match against Fiji, Nic White was chosen as the starter, while Issak Fines-Leleiwasa marked his World Cup debut.
Addressing his recovery, McDermott confirmed to Stan Sport’s Michael Atkinson, “The head’s good. We’re pretty lucky, absolutely no symptoms so we’ll be available this weekend.”
However, McDermott said there was disappointment in the Wallabies’ camp, describing the Fiji loss as a “tough watch.”
“The boys are pretty gutted with that performance,” he said.
“You are pretty helpless up there. You start to understand exactly what the coaches are going through but it gives you a different perspective.”
Anticipation builds for Eddie Jones’ team announcement this Friday, with debates stirring about the potential selection between Carter Gordon and Ben Donaldson for the No.10 jersey.
“Not just Carter but a lot of boys had tough outings,” said McDermott.
“We’ve stayed tight. That’s the only thing we can do. We’ve got to take those learnings, take the pain and propel ourselves forward.”
On another positive note, Prop Pone Fa’amausili is anticipated to make his return, reinforcing Australia’s front row options.
