Vega One justifies Eagle Farm quote
Vega One has delivered Blake Shinn a winning double with victory in the Stella Artois Plate.
Vega One has buried trainer Tony Gollan’s Fred Best Classic demons and justified his odds-on quote by winning the Stella Artois Plate at Eagle Farm.
Starting the $1.75 favourite, Vega One defeated Enterprise Louise ($41) by 1-1/4 lengths with Churning ($19) a head away third.
At his previous start, Vega One finished an unlucky 9th in the Fred Best Classic when forced to race wide early before wilting in the final stages.
There were no worries on Saturday for Gollan when champion jockey Blake Shinn had Vega One cruising in third before bringing him home with a well-timed finish.
“Everything went wrong in the Fred Best which was a very strong race and to come back to this race, with no disrespect to the opposition, and to get that sort of run was a really good win.
“He was drawn a little bit sticky but there’s no one riding better than Blake at this carnival.
“When he lobbed into that spot 100 metres after the start it was a very easy watch.”
Vega One will be spelled but Gollan believes he will measure up to Group races in the next 12 months.
“I think this time next year he’ll be in a lot of the better class races,” he said.
Vega One gave Shinn the second leg of a winning double after success aboard Kordia in the Winning Edge Presentations Stakes.
